LPG FAQ: the most common questions

Short answers to questions that are often asked about LPG. Longer articles are linked in each case.

How does LPG cost compare with petrol?

LPG is usually much cheaper per litre, but consumption is 15 to 25 percent higher. Overall you normally save per 100 kilometres. A worked example is in LPG, petrol or diesel.

Can any car be converted to LPG?

Almost any petrol car, though direct-injection and turbo engines need special technology. Diesel engines cannot be converted. Details in LPG conversion.

Does LPG damage the engine?

With a suitable system, good setup and regular maintenance this is usually not a problem in practice. One issue is the valve seats of older engines, because gas lubricates less than petrol. Ask the workshop for advice.

Do I lose the manufacturer's warranty?

That depends on the manufacturer and vehicle. Clarify it in writing with the manufacturer or dealer before converting.

How does a gas car start in the cold?

The engine normally starts on petrol and switches only once the vaporiser is warm. Cold starts are therefore not a problem.

How far can I get on one tank?

That depends on tank size and consumption. In addition you have the range of the petrol tank. See travelling with LPG.

Where do I find LPG stations?

On the map, using the location or route search. Our database contains more than 7,300 stations. Locations and prices can change, so check them before you drive.

Do I need an adapter abroad?

Usually yes. There are four common connectors in Europe. More under filling connectors and adapters.

Is LPG safe?

Yes, when properly installed and regularly inspected. The tank is pressure-resistant and has several safeguards. Details in LPG safety.

Is LPG the same as natural gas?

No. LPG is a propane-butane mix, while natural gas (CNG) consists mainly of methane and needs different tanks and stations. See What is LPG?

How environmentally friendly is LPG?

Somewhat better than petrol for CO2 and very good for particulates, but still a fossil fuel. See LPG and the environment.
